On Friday, Mar. 3, two Bishop Kenny track records were broken at the Bolles Bulldog Classic track meet. Senior Gabby Johnson took the long jump record and senior Ka’myya Haywood broke the 800-meter record.

The previous long jump record was 17’7 feet, set back in 2016 by Jaelyn Reyes, and was broken by over a foot from Johnson, increasing the record to 18’8.5 feet.

The day before the meet Johnson felt uneasy about jumping, but when she stepped onto the runway she was ready.

“I trusted my training and my coach and I ended up jumping almost 19 feet. I didn’t know it was the school record till Coach Brooks told me so I was really impressed with myself and it felt good to overcome my previous thoughts that I had the day before the meet,” Johnson said.

Mason Cathey held the 800-meter record for twenty-four years with the time of 2:11.60, until Friday night. Haywood was able to break the record by less than a second with the time of 2:10.98.

Haywood has been training for the 800-meter since Aug. 2021, waiting to finally break the long standing record.

“Going into the meet I felt like I was ready to run. There really isn’t a time where I feel like I’m not ready and I think having that readiness feeling helps boost your confidence in your performance,” Haywood said.
