On Friday, November 5, the Bishop Kenny swim & dive teams competed in the Class 2A Florida State Championships. The boys swim team won the state championships with half a dozen placements in individual and relay events and the girls team placed seventh.

Junior Evan Larson broke two BK records, beating his own record set last year in the 100 backstroke and a record set in 2011 in the 200 individual medley.

“I did not expect to break the previous records because I was just focusing on swimming to the best of my ability. I was not focused on any particular time, just fast swimming,” said Larson.

While it is an individual sport, the team is very close-knit and spends a lot of time together. The athletes participate in team bonding and dinners, and they are together on bus rides and in hotels when traveling to meets. This season, the team began a big/little program, where older team members are paired with younger ones.

“The best part about swim is the bonds you create with your teammates. You participate in some of the hardest practices together, making a bond like no other.” said Senior Jeb Brownell.

“I love competing with my teammates. The friends and memories I have made from swimming are something I will cherish forever,” said Junior Zachary Jones.
