Philadelphia, known as the City of Brotherly Love, has recently become home to a unique portal where residents and visitors can wave “hello” to people around the globe.
Located in LOVE Park, the circular video portal is part of a multi-city installation project by Portals.org. The portal’s live stream rotates every three minutes, connecting viewers in Philadelphia with others in cities like Dublin, Vilnius (Lithuania), Lublin (Poland), and more, allowing people from all over the world to interact with Philly residents.
Initially, the project was launched in New York City, but it was short-lived due to inappropriate and destructive behavior from some visitors. As a result, the portal was moved to a new location. Philadelphia, known as the birthplace of American independence, was chosen as the new home for the project.
When asked about the experience, several viewers shared their thoughts.
“I think it’s remarkable that we can wave and be friendly,” Kate McCabe said in an interview with USA Today. “Its’s an occasion to dance.”
“I think we’ll keep it cool and calm, so we can keep it here forever,” Dana Dabney from West Philadelphia said in an interview with CBS News. “Be nice, y’all!”
