71 Schoolgirls Emerged From a Storm Drain at a Rockland County Restaurant After Travelling Half a Mile Underground and the Internet Is Not Buying the Official Story
A school trip in Nyack, New York took a bizarre turn after a large group of schoolgirls allegedly got lost inside a massive drainage tunnel, travelling nearly half a mile underground before emerging from a drain in the patio of a Rockland County restaurant. The story has since gone viral and a growing number of people online are questioning whether the official explanation tells the whole story.
What Officially Happened on June 10
According to Nyack Mayor Joe Rand, the girls had been on a school trip visiting Nyack Memorial Park when a large group entered a drainage tunnel designed to collect most of the village’s stormwater runoff.
“They saw the culvert, they saw the cave, and they thought, let’s go take a look, see what’s there,” the mayor explained.
Once inside, according to the mayor, the girls kept going deeper.
“They started walking, and they just kept walking and walking and walking,” he said.
The group reportedly travelled roughly half a mile through the underground tunnel before emerging from a drain near the Hudson House restaurant.
The Restaurant Owner Could Not Believe What He Was Seeing
Hudson House restaurant owner Matt Hudson described the moment he realized what was happening outside his establishment.
“I was in the office when I heard kids chattering,” he said.
When he went to investigate, he found the group of girls climbing out of a drain directly behind his restaurant.
“Sure enough, we came back here into the patio, looked here, and it was filling up with kids.”
What the Mayor Said About Safety
Mayor Rand confirmed that “everybody was safe” but was clear that the girls should not have been in the tunnel in the first place.
“It was dangerous, they shouldn’t have been doing it,” he said.
The mayor has since vowed to review safety measures regarding the culvert and reminded visitors that storm drains are not for recreational use.
The Number That Has the Internet Talking
While few outlets have reported on the exact number of schoolgirls involved, the figure being widely circulated online is 71 girls. It is important to note that this number has not been verified by reliable sources and has not been officially confirmed by authorities.
People Are Not Buying the Official Story
The incident has sparked significant skepticism online with many people questioning how a group this large could have entered a storm drain without any adult noticing they were gone.
Influencer Bo Grant expressed doubt that 71 schoolgirls would all decide to enter a storm drain without supervision and suggested something else may have occurred. She also questioned why authorities were not notified when the girls went missing and accused Mayor Rand of “doing a fabulous job playing the whole thing off.”
On X, one user stated he was “not buying the official narrative” and called the situation “sketchy AF.”
Key questions being raised online include:
- How did 71 girls enter a storm drain without a single adult noticing?
- Why were authorities not immediately notified when the group went missing?
- How does a group that large travel half a mile underground without anyone raising an alarm?
No Official Investigation Underway
Despite the online skepticism, there is no sign that authorities are investigating beyond the mayor’s commitment to reviewing culvert safety measures. The official position remains that the girls entered the tunnel on their own out of curiosity and were safely recovered without serious injury.
Whether or not the full story has been told, the incident has put a spotlight on the lack of safety barriers around storm drainage systems that are clearly large enough for groups of children to enter and travel through undetected.
