Elderly Spectator on a Mobility Scooter Causes Massive Pile Up at Saarland Trofeo Juniors as Riders Fly Past at Full Speed
A pensioner on a mobility scooter caused a massive, high-speed crash during the LVM Saarland Trofeo in Germany, sending several junior cyclists tumbling across the tarmac during the fourth and final stage of the prominent multi-day race. The terrifying incident, caught on video, has since gone viral and sparked intense debate online.
How the Crash Happened
The collision involved 17-year-old Dutch rider Paul Vriesman, who was sent somersaulting through the air after slamming directly into the scooter. The race is part of the UCI Junior Nations Cup, an elite event that draws top 17 and 18-year-old riders from around the world, held annually in the Saarland region near the borders of France and Luxembourg.
According to reports, a Danish rider managed to dodge the mobility scooter at the very last second, but Vriesman had no space to react, leading directly to the collision. The impact caused a pile-up that forced several other riders to fall as well.
Riders Walked Away Without Serious Injuries
Despite how dramatic and dangerous the crash appeared on video, all riders involved are understood to have escaped without any serious injuries. The elderly spectator involved is also believed to be okay, though her mobility scooter likely suffered significant damage. Very little additional information about her has been made public.

What Vriesman Had to Say
Vriesman, who rides for the Decathlon CMA CGM junior program, shared his thoughts on Instagram shortly after the incident.
“Nasty crash but it looks like I got away with it relatively well and with no major injuries,” he wrote. “Not the way I was hoping to finish my first week back to racing after a few months of rehab, though.”
He continued, expressing his frustration over how the incident unfolded.
“I made some big steps this week towards coming back to my old form. Sad to have to DNF this Saarland Trofeo this way due to an old lady who was just living in her own world.”
A Difficult Season for the Young Dutchman
This crash adds to what has already been a difficult season for Vriesman. Before this viral incident, his start at Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne Juniors had also ended in injury, forcing him into a three-month break from the sport.
Reflecting on the latest setback, Vriesman said: “Didn’t get to finish the race while every stage was feeling like a big step forward. Lost for words on how something like this can happen. So much hard work and yet another setback.”
The Race Continued Despite the Chaos
Even with the disruption caused by the spectator, the race continued to its conclusion. The final stage was won by Alistair Forsyth of Australia, who rides for the Merida Adelaar Cycling Team.
In the overall general classification, Sindre Orholm-Lonseth of Norway, a teammate of Vriesman’s, took the top spot, finishing ahead of fellow Dutch rider Splinter van ‘t Hoff, who also performed strongly throughout the multi-day event.
The Video Sparks Outrage Online
Footage of the crash spread rapidly across Instagram and Reddit, with viewers reacting with a mix of shock, frustration, and disbelief that the situation could happen at all.
On Reddit, one user questioned the safety setup of the race itself, asking: “Is it common to have literally no barrier or tape separating the spectators from the racers? This seems like supremely negligent event design to me.”
Another user pushed back on that idea, responding: “You can’t secure the entire length of the course. Also, never doubt the power of human stupidity.”
Many Commenters Focused on Calls for Accountability
A large portion of the online reaction centered on whether the spectator should face legal consequences for her actions, regardless of her age.
One Reddit user wrote: “Criminal negligence. Put her in jail, simple enough.”
On Instagram, another commenter argued: “Needs to be charged with reckless endangerment and made to pay for all damages. So many out there these days, there needs to be a licence to operate them and training on operating this equipment is required.”
Others raised broader concerns about mobility scooter awareness, with one Reddit user writing: “If she’s on her scooter and doesn’t grasp the amount of space she occupies, she’s definitely not trained enough to ride on it.”
A Reminder of the Unpredictable Dangers in Cycling
This incident serves as a stark reminder of how quickly things can go wrong in competitive cycling, even when riders are following the rules and racing within a controlled course. As the video continues to circulate online, it has reignited broader conversations about spectator safety barriers at competitive cycling events and how race organizers can better separate athletes from the public during high-speed segments of a course.
