The city shines brighter than ever in “Wicked: Part One,” the long-awaited film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, which flew into theaters on November 22, 2024. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film delivers a reimagined take on the story that has been around since 2003.
Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, the musical-turned-movie serves as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz. It explores the untold story of Elphaba, the misunderstood green-skinned witch, and Glinda, her “bubbly yet complex” counterpart.
Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba headline the film. with performances that soar as high as a levitating broomstick. Grande’s crystalline vocals and comedic timing bring depth to Glinda, while Erivo’s powerful voice makes Elphaba a compelling protagonist. The chemistry between the two is electric, capturing the heart of their unlikely friendship and eventual rivalry.
The cast also features Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, the charming prince caught between the witches, and Jeff Goldblum as the enigmatic Wizard. Michelle Yeoh and Ethan Slater round out the ensemble as Madame Morrible and Boq.
Unlike the Broadway production, the movie has been split into two parts, allowing for a deeper dive into the story and characters. Wicked: Part One focuses on Elphaba’s early years at Shiz University and the events that lead to her becoming the “Wicked Witch of the West.” Fans can expect part two in 2025 on November 22nd.
Chu’s direction transforms Oz into a vibrant, fantastical world filled with lush landscapes, elaborate costumes, and breathtaking special effects. The film also features fan-favorite songs like “Defying Gravity” and “Popular,” reimagined with fresh arrangements by composer Stephen Schwartz and music producer Marc Platt.
Critics and audiences have praised the film for its faithfulness to the original material while adding new layers of depth. However, some viewers felt the two-part format stretched the pacing, leaving them eagerly awaiting part two.
