Three years ago, we saw Canvas take Schoology’s place. Now, a college search app called Scoir (pronounced “score”) is kicking Naviance to the curb.
While an extremely useful tool for exploring colleges and careers, Naviance was quite difficult to use; navigating the platform was unintuitive at best, and it could prove impossible to find certain tabs at worst.
Scoir is much easier to navigate, with an intuitive design and useful features that make looking for the right college less stressful, such as its ability to link directly to Common App.
One feature I’ve grown to love is the “drag-and-drop” feature, which allows the user to place their colleges into three categories: following, applying, and applied. These tabs help keep students organized and are viewable by your school counselor, so that they can keep up-to-date on your application process.
To schools put under the “applying” tab, the student is asked to select which application deadline they will be submitting for. This feature removes the uncertainty of applying too late, since many colleges–especially those out-of-state–can have varying application deadlines.
Students are also able to request recommendation letters from teachers through the app, making the process easier and more streamlined.
Of course, there are certain things that Naviance excelled in that Scoir seems to lack.
“I do miss the school acceptance graphs for the individual colleges that Naviance had,” said Senior Matthew Suhr.
Naviance’s feature, to visualize college-acceptance rates through graphs, offered a quick way for students to understand their likelihood of getting into the college.
Scoir likely sacrificed statistics such as this graph for the sake of making the app easier to use.
Still, the app offers other features that make up for the loss of in-depth statistics.
Scoir offers quizzes for students to take. The PrincipalsYou assessment is a personality test that determines the user’s personality and suggests careers that would best suit it. The other test is a Career Interest assessment that helps students narrow down their scope of interest and shows careers that match their interests. Both of these tests are great places for uncertain students to start their career exploration.
Overall, the Scoir app is a definitive improvement from Naviance. Start looking for your dream college now–Scoir might reveal the perfect place for you to attend.
