Every year, St. Vincent DePaul Club holds its Thanksgiving food drive to collect the ingredients needed to offer families around Jacksonville an opportunity to have a meal at Thanksgiving. But this year, a big change is happening for food collection time.
The event has been apart of the community for such a long time that “no one could remember a start date,” Noreen Thurson said.
Thurson said that they “have stayed to the original core mission which is to help the needy of the Jacksonville area.”
Supervised by Thurson, the school has been able to raise enough donations to support the area every year. Even when it was unlikely at times the goal amount would be accomplished. Every year, “more than enough has always come in, the need has always been met,” Thurson said.
However this year, instead of collection day being the week of Thanksgiving, it is being moved to Tuesday, November 14 which is a week in advance. This is a “big change,” Thurson states, because they don’t have as much time to collect the food.
With a lot of families requesting aid this year, a lot of food will be needed to fulfill the goal of helping the needy. But with the support from students, families and social platforms used to spread the message, hopefully this year, as every year, is just as successful.
