Tragedy has struck the City of Los Angeles as two major wildfires have destroyed more than 38,000 acres of land.
Both the Palisades and Eaton fires stared on Jan. 7, since then evolving into the most destructive wildfires recorded in Southern California history. According to ABC News, together the fires have destroyed more that 12,000 structures and both fires remain at or below 35% containment.
In CNN’s fire report, it was stated that at least 25 people have died in the fires and more than 6 million people in the LA area remain under a critical fire threat.
“I grew up in Brentwood, Los Angeles, which is about 10 minutes away from the Pacific Palisades. My cousin’s house was one of three in their entire neighborhood to survive the fire,” senior William Wainwright said. “Seeing all of the places I loved gone has made me so sad because I feel like these places hold a little bit of my soul, and who I am as a person.”
Thousands of families have lost everything and need all the help they can get. Here are some ways to support them, even from across the U.S.
An easy was to support relief efforts is by making donations. There are several different programs and community help groups you can donate to. California Community Foundation, Direct Relief, World Central Kitchen, Mutual Aid Los Angeles Network and Los Angeles Regional Food Bank are just a few of the organizations providing direct relief to first responders and families affected by the fires.
Another way to provide support to the LA community is by donating old clothes, households items, pet supplies and medical equipment. Visit websites like WalkGoodLA and KTLA5 to find places to mail your donations.
“It is so important to give to these families because they truly have nothing,” William said.
