The original Chewbacca in the Star Wars movies, Peter Mayhew, has died at the age of 74. This famous Hollywood icon played Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy and once more in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. His family has made it known many times that the Star Wars family meant much more to him than his role in the film.

Many remember Mayhew through his body language and expressions he performed while filling Chewbacca’s role. According to fans, he made Chewbacca a very memorable and beloved character.

People remember him as a very generous man. While he was alive he started the Peter Mayhew Foundation to support those in crisis situations. For example, it provided both supplies and food for children in Venezuela who were in need.

“He was the gentlest of giants. A big man with an even bigger heart who never failed to make me smile & a loyal friend who I loved dearly. I’m grateful for the memories we shared & I’m a better man for just having known him. Thanks Pete,” tweeted his friend Mark Hamill.
